Rosacea, Facial Veins and Flushing

    * Rosecea is a skin disease that predominantly affects the middle third of the face, causing persistent redness over the areas that normally blush, including forehead, chin, and nose.
    * The tiny blood vessels in these areas enlarge and become more visible through the skin, appearing as tiny red lines (telangiectasias).
    * Additionally pimples that resemble acne may occur on the affected areas.
    * However, unlike acne, these pimples do not cause whiteheads or blackheads.
    * Rosacea is quite frequently mis-diagnosed and treated as acne.
    * Acne medication can actually worsen this disease.

Rosacea is primarily manifested in adults (ages 30-50), of both sex, who have fair skin.

    * The cause of this skin disorder is unknown.
    * Emotional factors such as stress, fear, anxiety or embarrassment may aggravate the facial flushing.
    * A flare up can be due to changes in the weather (extreme hot or cold tempratures) and humidity, or strong winds, or sun exposure.
    * Smoking, spicy food, hot beverages, alcoholic drinks, and some medications (vaso-dilators) can also aggravate rosacea.
    * In most cases, the color of the afflicted skin fails to return to normal during the in-between flare up periods.
    * This disorder rarely reverses itself and may last for years.
    * If left untreated, the symptoms will worsen over time.
    * One of the prominent signs of untreated rosacea is the disfiguring nose condition called rhinophoma.
    * This condition is mainly seen in afflicted men. About half of the patients with rosecea develop inflammatory conjunctivitis (pink eye).
    * If left untreated, it will cause corneal damage (rosecea keratitis) and impairment of vision.

Although rosecea can be not be treated, it can be controlled using a variety of prescription topical and oral medications. In the recent years, through the use of IPL, medical providers have been able to successfully obliterate the enlarged skin veins (telangiectasias) and other facial skin changes that are due to rosecea.

Birthmarks, Port Wine Stains and Venous Lakes

    * These skin discolorations are due to either a localized congregation of venous network or engorgement of individual venous structure.
    * None of these entities cause any clinical symptoms.
    * However, depending on their location, size, and shape they may be aesthetically considered “unacceptable”.

By using highly specialized laser equipment, which is specifically designed for treatment of small veins, these skin discolorations can be permanently obliterated and removed.
