Hyperhidrosis

Excessive sweating, clinically known as hyperhidrosis, can significantly affect a person’s quality of life. It can be embarrassing & socially isolating, and many people find the condition quite upsetting. Depending on individual’s career, it can also affect his/her performance or job.

In most cases, problematic & excessive sweating is limited to specific areas of the body. The most common areas affected areas are the scalp, underarms, hands, feet, under the breasts and groin.

Because there are a few potentially serious conditions that can also cause excessive sweating, it is important for the patient to be evaluated by an experienced medical provider for excessive sweating before initiation of treatment. Treatments may result in muscle weakness in the hands. Patients must be assessed for their career and lifestyle needs & determine whether Botox is the best option.

Botox injections block the nerve signals responsible for sweating. Although the patient will continue to have normal perspiration, it stops the sweat glands from producing too much sweat. The injections are generally well tolerated by patients, & the treatment is very effective.

The procedure is simple. Numbing cream is applied to the treatment area before the injections. The physician will clean & map the treatment areas. Injections are performed with a very tiny needle. Traditionally no down-time is expected. Bruising, swelling, or tenderness is possible after the procedure, but is generally minor. Patients typically start seeing results in five days, with full results after two weeks. Results may last up to 5-6 months.
